Dear Mr. Joe Gingrich:

Thank you for your correspondence of July 5, 2011, concerning firearms
legislation.

The Government of Canada supports the current licensing scheme, which
limits lawful possession of firearms to persons who have been screened
to ensure that they do not pose a risk to public safety. However, I
would like to assure you that I stand behind our government's commitment
to repeal the long gun registry.

My colleague the Honourable Vic Towes, Minister of Public Safety, is the
primary lead with respect to firearms legislation. I have therefore
taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondence to Minister
Toews for his information and consideration.
