Kelly Block, MP
Dear Ms. Block,
We understand that Mr. Harper plans to introduce legislation this fall to scrap the long-gun registry. We urgently call to your attention that merely ending the “long-gun registry” falls far short of what your Conservative Caucus colleague Garry Breitkreuz so vigorously championed for over ten years as the former Conservative Firearms Critic. The major problem with the 1995 Firearms Act is not the registration of long-guns; the major problem is the licencing of firearms owners.
To be effective, any corrective legislation must repeal of all of the Liberals’ Firearms Act and its attendant Criminal Code provisions.
We have enclosed “How the Firearms Act (Bill C-68) Violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms”, a pamphlet written by Canadian constitutional scholar Dr. Ted Morton of the University of Calgary.
As noted therein, the Firearms Act:
Simply ending the long-gun registry does not address any of these violations.
Therefore we trust we can count on your active support in the defence of our traditional Canadian liberties.
Please work for the repeal of all of the Firearms Act and its attendant Criminal Code provisions.
