Sunday, 05 February 2012 Brad Trost, MP Dear Mr. Trost, I heartily applaud and fully support your efforts to have our Conservatives MPs “do better” and actually represent “the Conservative position.”1 This is a long overdue issue of authentic political representation that needs to be immediately corrected. I trust all your conservative caucus colleagues will readily sustain and reinforce your efforts. On the vital property issue of fulfilling the Conservative Party’s promise to respect “the Rights of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly”2, I pray that you and your fellow MPs will no longer blindly accept Mr. Harper’s false assertion that “eliminating the long-gun registry” fulfills the Conservatives’ commitment to responsible firearms owners. Mr. Harper’s Bill “to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act” does not address the primary evil of the Liberals’ 1995 attack on responsible firearms owners. Bill C-19 does absolutely nothing to repeal the licencing mandate of the Firearms Act. In a direct affront to Canadians’ historic responsible use of our most vital piece of personal property Bill C-19 leaves the criminalization of the mere possession of a firearm deeply embedded in the Criminal Code of Canada. Mr. Harper has absolutely no justification to endorse and continue the Liberals’ attack on the responsible ownership and peaceful use of firearms. If Mr. Harper truly wants to make Canadians safer he would institute a Firearms Prohibition Registry3 that tracks violent criminals. Rather than harass all the responsible gun owners in Canada with licencing, Mr. Harper needs to affirm our right to self-protection. Sincerely, Edward B. Hudson DVM, MS
